Clares Rocket was made the uneasy 6/4 favourite, with connections viewing the middle draw as unfavourable. Conversely, Tyrur Shay was strongly fancied and was expected to enjoy a trouble free run on the outside. As the Derby roar reached a crescendo the traps lifted and it was Hiya Butt and Astute Missile who approached the first bend in front. Hiya Butt led around the first bend, followed by Astute Missile and Clares Rocket, while Droopys Acrobat was baulked. Around the next two bends Astute Missile continually challenged Hiya Butt who suffered bumping at the fourth bend allowing Astute to take up the running. Meanwhile Tyrur Shay was running on strongly on the wide outside. Down the home straight Astute Missile, the complete outsider of the party at 28/1, comfortably held the late challenge of Tyrur by 3/4 of a length to claim the £175,000 first prize in 28.92. Clares Rocket was a disappointing 4 1/2 lengths back in third; Murrys Act was 1 1/2 lengths away in fourth after being slowly away. Droopys Acrobat was 1 3/4 lengths behind in fifth, while the early paced Hiya Butt finished last.

First Semi-Final

In a tight betting race for the first semi-final Hiya Butt and Bruisers Bullet were made the joint 5/2 favourites. Enjoying the benefit of the inside trap, Hiya Butt made the most of the advantage and was quick away, building up a lead around the first bend. There was bumping in behind which affected all of the other runners, with Forest Con and Bruisers Bullet suffering the most. Although Droopts Acrobat was also involved in the first bend scrimmaging, he recovered quickly and ran on well. Hiya Butt led throughout and came home the 3/4 length winner in 29.17, followed by Droopys Acrobat (6/1) claiming second place in 29.23, just a head in front of the third qualifier Murrys Act (10/1). There then followed Droopys Buick (4/1) in fourth, Brusiers a further 2 lengths behind in fifth, while Forest Con (11/2) brought up the rear.

Second Semi-Final

The second semi-final was generally regarded as the tougher semi, but Clares Rocket was made the 10/11 favourite, while Tyrur Shay (13/8) enjoyed strong support. As the traps lifted it was Clares Rocket who was very quickly away and led around the first bend from Astute Missile (20/1) and Sallows Ford (50/1). Clares maintained a strong lead, while Tyrur Shay was forced wide holding up his customary strong finish. Down the final straight Tyrur was making relentless headway but failed by 1 3/4 lengths to overhaul Clares Rocket who won in 28.83. Tyrur Shay (28.96) got up by a head to claim second spot, while Astute Missile (28.98) was justly rewarded with the final qualifying place. There then followed Sallows Ford 3 1/2 lengths back in fourth, Swithins Brae 2 lengths back in fifth, while Collavanny Mason was a further 2 lengths behind in last place.

FIRST QUARTER FINAL

In the first quarter final Clares Rocket was made the uneasy 13/8 favourite, strongly challenged in the betting ring by Bruisers Bullet offered at 7/4. As the traps opened Clares Rocket made the most of the inside draw and led at the first, challenged initially by Ballinakil Clare (10/1) who was bumped at the first. Clares Rocket continued to make all, winning by an impressive 4 and a half lengths in 28.99, the fastest time of the night. Astute Missile, who was badly bumped on the run up ran on to claim the second semi-final spot in 29.35, with Bruisers Bullet the final qualifier, a further 4 and a quarter lengths back, in 29.69.

SECOND QUARTER FINAL

In the second quarter-final Droopys Buick was made the well backed 5/4 favourite, particularly as he had his favoured inside box. However, as the traps rose it was Carn Brea who showed the early pace, although he was badly bumped at the first along with Crossfield Hugo. Meanwhile Swithins Brae (9/2) also showed early pace and led around the first, followed by Forest Con 2/1) and Droopys Buick (5/4 fav). Swithins Brae stretched his lead to an impressive 4 and a quarter lengths, winning in 29.29, while Forest Con ran on on the outside to claim second spot a neck in front of Droppys Buick, with Newinn Blitz just failing in his bid to claim a semi-final spot.

THIRD QUARTER FINAL

The third quarter final was the most open of the four, with the bookies making Danzey Exception and Pacey Bambi the uneasy 5/2 joint favourites. Droopys Acrobat (4/1) was the quickest away from the traps and led around the first, with bumping in behind involving Cable Bay (6/1), Murrys Act (4/1) and Pacey Bambi (5/2). Droopys Acrobat made all unhindered, winning by 3 and a quarter lengths in 29.02, with Sallows Ford (12/1) running on to claim second spot two and a half lengths ahead of the third qualifier Murrys Act.

FOURTH QUARTER FINAL

In the last of the quarter-finals Tyrur Shay was strongly supported at 4/5 favourite, followed in the betting by inside dog Hiya Butt at 3/1. As the traps rose Hiya Butt made his customary quick start and led around the first followed by Slaheny King (25/1) and Coolavanny Mason (6/1).  Hiya Butt continued to make the running until the final bend when Tyrur Shay challenged. In a good tussle down the home straight Tyrur Shay got up on the line to win by half a length in 29.02 from Hiya Butt, with just a head back to the final qualifier Coolavanny Mason.
